class=\"wp-element-caption\">National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The <strong>7th edition of Ganga Utsav<\/strong> was recently organized by the <strong>National Mission for Clean Ganga in New Delhi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong> <strong>NMCG<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>NMCG, listed as a society as per the <strong>Societies Registration Act, 1860<\/strong>, was the implementation arm of the <strong>National Ganga River Basin Authority (<\/strong>NGRBA<strong>)<\/strong> constituted under the <strong>Environment (Protection) Act (EPA), 1986<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Later, the <strong>NGRBA<\/strong> was discontinued (2016) and replaced by the National Council for Rejuvenation, Conservation and Management of River Ganga under the chairmanship of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pmindia.gov.in\/en\/#:~:text=Shri%20Narendra%20Modi%20was%20sworn,India%20from%202014%20to%202019.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Minister<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>primary objective of NMCG<\/strong> is to abate pollution and rejuvenate the Ganga by adopting a river basin approach through programs like Namami Gange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nmcg.nic.in\/\">NMCG<\/a><\/strong> is placed under the <strong>Ministry of Jal Shakti<\/strong> and has a two-tier management structure, both headed by the Director General of NMCG-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Governing Council<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Executive Committee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-100\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-align-center wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/khanglobalstudies.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Programs under NMCG<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ganga Praharis<\/strong> have taken initiatives to train and empower local communities as guardians of the river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan<\/strong> aims to promote adventure tourism and ecological awareness along the river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ganga Utsav<\/strong> to celebrate the cultural and spiritual significance of the river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ganga Quest<\/strong> is an online quiz competition to educate students about the river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To prepare the <strong>Ganga River Basin Management Plan<\/strong> with inputs from experts and stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>List of initiatives on Ganga<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Namami Gange Program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ganga Action Plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>National River Ganga Basin Authority (NRGBA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clean Ganga Fund<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bhuvan-Ganga Web App<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Delay in starting waste management schemes due to land acquisition problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of initiative from local level governments creates hurdles in MSW separation and recycling, creating a cadre of village and town level volunteers, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NMCG is a Rs 20,000 crore mission but only Rs 14,745 crore has been released to states for infrastructure work till June 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many towns and cities along the river lack proper waste treatment infrastructure, leading to untreated waste entering the river.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quality Council of India raised the issue of garbage dumps near the ghats, which are a threat to the cleanliness of the Ganga.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NMCG&#8217;s approach of developing a water quality index on the lines of <strong>AQI<\/strong> should be taken forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the mission to be successful, there must be synergy between administrative vision and civil society participation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better inter-agency coordination and dedicated plans for implementation can boost the success of NMCG which will translate into manifold
