At the age of 9, she was married to 12-year-old Jyotirao Phule. Her husband taught her to read and write, encouraging her to become a teacher and work for the upliftment of women and marginalized communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contributions to Women\u2019s Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First Girls\u2019 School (1848): <\/strong>Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule opened the first school for girls in Pune, where Savitribai herself became the first female teacher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Education for the Marginalized: <\/strong>The Phules established schools for communities that were excluded from education. They also provided scholarships and raised awareness among parents about the importance of education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Support from Fatima Sheikh: <\/strong>Fatima Sheikh, a Muslim woman, and her brother Usman Sheikh offered their home as a space for the school. Fatima Sheikh is regarded as India\u2019s first Muslim woman teacher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overcoming Challenges: <\/strong>Savitribai faced severe opposition. People often hurled stones and mud at her, but she remained steadfast in her mission to educate and empower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contributions to Social Reforms<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Opposition to Social Evils:<\/strong>Campaigned against child marriage and the sati system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Promoted widow remarriage and fought against oppressive customs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Women\u2019s Rights: <\/strong>Established organizations like the Mahila Seva Mandal to empower women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposed the practice of shaving widows&#8217; heads, working with barbers to halt this custom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shelters for Distressed Women: <\/strong>In 1863, she opened a shelter for rape survivors and pregnant widows, providing them safety and dignity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fight Against Caste Discrimination: <\/strong>Opened her home\u2019s well for Dalits and other marginalized communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded the Satyashodhak Samaj with Jyotirao Phule to combat caste oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Service During Plague Epidemic: <\/strong>During the 1897 plague epidemic, she set up a clinic with her adopted son to serve the afflicted.
