The United States and Israel pounded Iran on Tuesday with what the Pentagon and Iranians on the ground said were the most intense airstrikes of the war, despite global markets betting that President Donald Trump will seek to end the conflict soon.

India has strongly condemned Pakistan's airstrikes on Afghanistan as a "flagrant violation" of international law, saying it is "hypocritical" to invoke Islamic solidarity while carrying out attacks that have killed civilians during Ramadan.

Months after the Centre launched a crackdown on widespread irregularities in the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), its showpiece rural drinking water scheme, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved an additional allocation of Rs 1.51 lakh crore for the initiative till 2028 - with digital mapping to ensure "transparency and accountability"

The union government is exploring the possibility of delinking the Women's Reservation Act from the delimitation and Census exercises and implementing it before the 2027 Assembly elections, when Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are scheduled to go to polls, it is learnt. Sources said the government was seriously considering introducing a lottery system to earmark one-third of the constituencies that have to be reserved for women.

The Chhattisgarh Cabinet on Tuesday approved the draft of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026, which seeks to curb religious conversions carried out through force, inducement, fraudulent means, undue influence, or misrepresentation.

The Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has caused significant dislocation in energy markets, and sharp price gyrations. On Monday, Brent crude oil surged to nearly $120 per barrel. Prices softened thereafter, with reports suggesting discussions between the G7 countries over the release of oil from their strategic reserves (the group is yet to take a decision on the matter) and US President Donald Trump's comments that the war could come to an end "very soon". Crude is currently hovering around $87 per barrel.

Energy markets often respond as much to geopolitical risk as to supply disruptions. An IEA analysis showed that insurance premiums, freight rates, and shipping delays rise before supply constraints emerge.

He was appointed as Election Commissioner on March 15, 2024 and took over as CEC on February 19, 2025. His tenure is till January 2029.
