As the two-day talks between the Indian and US trade teams in New Delhi drew to a close Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in the evening that he spoke with US President Donald Trump and they reviewed the progress of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and discussed, among other issues, the importance of sustaining momentum in the efforts to enhance bilateral trade.

For the second time since October when it announced the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, the Election Commission Thursday extended the deadline for electors in five states -Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh- and the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to submit enumeration forms in the ongoing exercise by three to 14 days.

In a major overhaul, the Delhi government has approved a revamp of the Capital's administrative structure, reorganising its 11 revenue districts into 13 with an aim to improve coordination and speed up delivery of public services. The new districts will be aligned with the city's 12 municipal zones, along with the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment Board.

A high-level US trade delegation is in New Delhi for a fresh push to break the India-US trade stalemate. New Delhi insists those duties must ease before any deal and has resisted US pressure to open the sensitive agriculture and dairy markets.

The Supreme Court Thursday said that in cases like those under the UAPA where there is a presumption of guilt of the accused, the state must also take steps to ensure speedy trial even as it underlined that protection of Article 21 rights "cannot be the sole ground of consideration in cases...where the security or integrity of the nation is called into question".
