Govt changes NREG terms: States to pay, pause for farm work

In a major overhaul of the two-decade-old rural job guarantee scheme, the BJP-led NDA government, in its third term, has prepared a Bill that proposes to increase the number of days for which work can be demanded by rural households in a year to 125 from 100 now, and for the first time shifts 40 per cent of the financial burden of the scheme to states.

President Droupadi Murmu Monday administered the oath of office to retired IAS officer Raj Kumar Goyal as Chief Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

Underlining that India and Jordan share a "common and clear stance against terrorism", Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed hope that "peace and stability will prevail in the region" as he held bilateral talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman on Monday.

NREGA needs reform but changes fray safety net

There are political overtones to the Narendra Modi government's move to repeal the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and introduce the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Grameen (VB-G RAM G) Bill to replace it. The proposed law aims at providing 125 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose members volunteer to undertake unskilled manual work. This is more than the 100 days under the previous UPA dispensation-enacted MGNREGA.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently announced that his company had started a long-term research initiative, Project Suncatcher, which aims to put solar-powered data centres into space by 2027. "We'll send tiny, tiny racks of machines, and have them in satellites, test them out, and then start scaling from there".

The government on Monday introduced a new Bill in the Lok Sabha called the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill, 2025, which will allow private participation in India's highly restricted nuclear power sector.

November unemployment rate drops to new low of 4.7% 

India's unemployment rate dropped to a new low of 4.7 per cent in November, according to the statistics ministry's latest monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) report published on Monday. Joblessness fell sharply from 5.2 per cent in October even as the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) rose from the previous month.
