A southern alliance and an elephant in the room

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu apparently seeks to forge an informal "southern alliance" — to arguably work with his counterparts in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala towards building a $10 trillion-plus bloc by 2047. The five states together account for less than a fifth of India's population but over 31 per cent of its GDP, 35 per cent of factories and foreign direct investment equity inflows, and 26 per cent of total GST revenue collections. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai house the country's busiest airports after Delhi and Mumbai, with Kochi at No 8, just below Kolkata and Ahmedabad.

Why Loss & Damage Fund for Nepal matters beyond it

A month after it raised a request, Nepal has been promised a sum of $20 million (around Rs 190 crore) to help it recover from the devastating flash floods in August this year. Though the amount is extremely small compared to an estimated need of about $4.75 billion (around Rs 44,600 crore) in recovery and reconstruction costs, it marks the beginning of the implementation of a new international regime on loss and damage. This system seeks to provide financial assistance to developing countries affected by climate events.

However, companies making profitable discoveries will have to repay the money, under the Centre's Rs 84,084-crore Samudra Manthan scheme.
