Context:

U-WIN Portal, a replication of the COVID-19 vaccine management system Co-WIN, is set for a pan-India launch by the end of August.

• The Minister of Finance announced in the interim Budget for 2024-2025 that U-WIN and intensified Mission Indradhanush efforts will be rolled out nationwide for improved immunization management.
• Currently, the portal is in pilot mode across all the states and Union Territories except for West Bengal, which has yet to start uploading data.

U-WIN Portal

• It aims to maintain an electronic registry of routine immunisations.
• U-WIN platform captures each & every vaccination event of all pregnant women & children under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).
• The platform generates a uniform QR-based, digitally verifiable e-vaccination certificate, similar to the Covid certificate, accessible anytime with a single click.
• The portal will target 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.6 crore infants (0-1 years) annually by providing 11 vaccines against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases.
  Preventable 12 diseases: Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Rubella, severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis, Rotavirus diarrhoea, Hepatitis B, Meningitis & Pneumonia.

Universal Immunization Programme (UIP)

• It was launched as an Expanded Programme on Immunization in 1978, Later it was renamed as a Universal Immunization Programme in 1985 when it was expanded beyond urban areas.
• It is a part of the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Program under the National Health Mission (NHM).
• It is one of the largest public health programs in the world under which vaccination is being provided free of cost to all pregnant women & children.

Benefits of U-WIN Portal

• Facilitates the creation of Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs for maintaining comprehensive health records.
  ABHA number is a 14-digit number that will uniquely identify you as a participant in India’s digital healthcare ecosystem.
• It supports the frontline workers to digitally record all vaccination events for children and pregnant women for complete, accurate, and easy record maintenance.
• Digital Vaccination Records of all Pregnant women & children are created in real-time.
• All Pregnant women can be registered/tagged for vaccination and children till 6 years of age can be registered for vaccination on the U-WIN platform.
• Implements a name-based tracking mechanism to reduce zero-dose and left-out children.
• Allows self-registration, and appointment scheduling, and sends automated SMS alerts for confirmations and reminders.
