Context:

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports has recognized the  Indian Kalarippayattu Federation as the Regional Sports Federation for its commendable efforts in promoting this martial art across the nation.

About Kalaripayattu

• It is considered one of the most ancient martial arts in the world (it originated in the 3rd century BC). 
• The term Kalaripayattu is derived from two words – “Kalari” meaning place of exercise or gymnasium and “payattu” meaning to fight or exercise.
• The Kalari is constructed four feet dug down the ground, the interiors of the Kalari are 42 feet in length and 21 feet in width providing the ideal setting for mastering this intricate art form.
• It involves rigorous exercises to enhance reflexes, agility, and strength, preparing practitioners for unarmed combat. 
• Additionally, it emphasizes proficiency in wielding an array of weapons, including sticks, daggers, knives, spears, swords and shields, Urumi etc.
• There are mainly two main styles of Kalarippayattu: 

1. Vadakkan (Nothern style) – The Vadakkan Kalarippayattu is predominantly practised in the Malabar region of Kerala. The Vadakkan style emphasizes more on graceful body movement and weaponry.
2. Thekken (Southern Style) - The Thekken Kalarippayattu or Adi Murai is practised mainly in the Travancore region, this style involves more free armed techniques & powerful movements.

Indian Kalaripayattu Federation (IKF) 

• Indian Kalarippayattu federation was registered under the Charitable Society Act 1955, and commissioned it’s work Since 1995 onwards.
• At Present IKF has got units in 21 states of India and IKF promotes Kerala Projects.
• IKF is affiliated to the Indian Council of Sports in 2003 and   Recogonization by the international Kalarippayattu Fedaration in 2007.
