ISRO Technologies Transferred to Private Companies

SYLLABUS

GS-3:

Awareness in the field of Space.

Context:

Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), has transferred five ISRO-developed technologies to Indian firms to promote self-reliance and reduce import dependence.

About Technology Transfer

  • The Technology Transfer Agreements (TTAs) were signed as tripartite agreements between the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and recipient private industries for technologies developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
  • The transfers were made to indigenise critical technologies, boost commercialisation, and expand applications beyond space into biomedical, solar, and industrial manufacturing sectors.
  • The transfers will enhance domestic capacity and self-reliance, reduce dependence on imports while encouraging greater private sector participation in India’s space ecosystem.

The Five Technologies

Technology

Description with Application

Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic (LTCC) Multi-Chip Module

Space Applications Centre (SAC)

Voltix Semicon Private Limited, Pune

·       Integrates multiple semiconductor chips into a compact module, making devices smaller and more efficient.

·       It is particularly useful in biomedical equipment such as RT-PCR kits that require mass production.

Room Temperature Vulcanising (RTV) Silicone Single-Part Adhesive (SILCEM R9)

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)

Crest Speciality Resins Private Limited, Ahmedabad

·       A special adhesive that cures at room temperature without extra heating.

·       It is mainly applied in bonding solar panels, ensuring durability and stability in harsh outdoor conditions.

Film Adhesives EFA 1753 and EFA 1752

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)

Azista Composites Private Limited, Hyderabad

·       High-strength film adhesives designed for bonding lightweight composite materials.

·       They are widely used in aerospace and industrial manufacturing where strength and reduced weight are critical.

30-Watt Hybrid Micro Circuit (HMC) Direct Current to Direct Current (DC-DC) Converter

U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC)

Ananth Technologies Private Limited, Hyderabad

·       A device that converts one level of direct current power into another while keeping the supply stable.

·       It is essential for satellites, defence electronics, and advanced communication systems where uninterrupted power is crucial.

Anodisation of 3D-Printed Aluminium-10 Silicon-Magnesium (Al-10Si-Mg) Alloy

U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC)

Pushpak Aerospace India Private Limited, Bengaluru

·       A surface treatment method applied to 3D-printed aluminium alloys, making them stronger and more resistant to corrosion.

·        It is valuable for aerospace components that must withstand extreme conditions.

IN-SPACe and NewSpace India Limited (NSIL)

  • IN-SPACe is a single-window, autonomous nodal agency established in June 2020 to promote and regulate the private space sector in India.
  • NSIL is the commercial arm of the ISRO, established in 2019 as a wholly-owned Government of India company to commercially exploit ISRO's technologies and products, and promote the participation of Indian industries in the space sector.

Significance of the Technology Transfers Agreement

  • ISRO Technology Partnership: The agreement enables ISRO to focus on Research and Development and future missions, while positioning it as a technology incubator driving national growth, allowing industry to take the lead in scaling and commercialisation.
  • Empowering Space Sector: Private sector access to space sector facilitates access to advanced, proven technologies, reduces costs and import dependence, and enhances competitive pricing in global markets.
  • Expanding Space Economy: It enables space-grade technologies across sectors such as healthcare, renewable energy, and manufacturing, while fostering private sector confidence, investment, and innovation in India’s growing space economy.
