MoD Signs ₹661.50 Crore Contract for BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers

Context: Recently, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a ₹661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers for Indian Navy ships under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.

More on the News

  • The contract is for the shipborne Fire Control System and launchers used to employ the BrahMos weapon system; it is therefore distinct from a fresh procurement of BrahMos missiles themselves.
  • The procurement carries a minimum 68% indigenous content, with participation of Indian industries, including MSMEs, and is expected to generate employment over three years. It is aimed at strengthening India’s maritime security and advancing the indigenisation of advanced military technology.
  • The BrahMos system fitted on frontline warships is the Indian Navy’s primary Surface-to-Surface Missile (SSM) system for maritime strike operations, capable of engaging land and sea targets at extended ranges with pinpoint accuracy at supersonic speed.

About BrahMos

  • Development: BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile system developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia.
  • Propulsion: It is a two-stage missile—a solid-propellant booster as the first stage, followed by a liquid-fuelled ramjet as the second stage. It reaches about Mach 2.8 during the cruise phase.
  • Range & operation: Standard BrahMos has a range of up to 290 km and follows a “Fire and Forget” principle, while Extended Range (ER) variants offer ranges of around 450 km.
  • Versions/platforms: BrahMos has ship-based, land-based and air-launched configurations, while a submarine-launched version has also been developed. The air-launched version is integrated with the Su-30MKI.
  • BrahMos-NG: The Next-Generation (NG) version is envisioned as a smaller, lighter, smarter and stealthier derivative, with higher indigenous content. It is initially being developed for air launch and is planned for integration with the Su-30MKI and subsequently LCA Tejas; its future application is envisaged for ground, naval and underwater platforms.
