Context: Recently, the Union Defence Minister released the vision document titled Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military in New Delhi to transform the Indian Armed Forces into a modern, integrated and technologically advanced military by 2047.

• The document has been prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff as a comprehensive roadmap for the long-term transformation of the Indian Armed Forces.

• The vision document outlines key strategic reforms, capability enhancements and organisational changes required to address the evolving geopolitical, technological and security environment.

• The roadmap aligns military modernisation with India’s broader national goal of becoming a developed nation by the centenary of independence in 2047.

Key Highlights of Defence Forces Vision 2047

• Transformation into a Modern Military Force: The document proposes the development of a technologically advanced and combat-ready military capable of responding effectively to emerging security threats.

• Integrated Multi-Domain Operations: The roadmap envisages building an integrated force capable of operating across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains to manage complex security challenges and deter adversaries.

• Greater Jointness Among Services: The document emphasises deeper coordination among the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force in areas such as planning, operations and capability development.

• Adoption of Emerging Technologies: The vision highlights the importance of innovation, advanced technologies and modern training frameworks to prepare the armed forces for future warfare.

• Promotion of Self-Reliance in Defence: The roadmap supports the objective of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence by encouraging the development and adoption of indigenous defence technologies and systems.

o It encourages stronger collaboration between the private defence industry, public sector defence enterprises, startups and innovation ecosystems to boost domestic defence production. 

• Phased Capability Development: The strategy proposes a structured implementation framework with clearly defined short-term, medium-term and long-term capability goals for defence modernisation.

Strategic Approach to National Security

• Whole-of-Nation Approach: The document stresses that national security requires coordinated efforts across multiple domains, including military strength, diplomacy, technology and economic power.

• Strengthening Strategic Partnerships: The roadmap highlights the importance of international defence cooperation and partnerships to enhance technological capabilities and operational readiness.

• Adapting to Emerging Security Challenges: The vision recognises the rapidly changing global security environment and underscores the need for continuous institutional reforms and capability upgrades.

• Long-Term Strategic Goal: The roadmap aims to ensure that by 2047 the Indian military emerges as a technologically advanced, highly capable and globally respected defence force supporting India’s aspiration of becoming a developed nation.
