One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution

Context: 

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has launched mass mobilization campaign titled ‘One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution’ ahead of World Environment Day 2025.

More on the News

  • The campaign, part of the government’s broader Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) initiative, seeks to engage citizens in adopting eco-friendly habits and reducing plastic waste.
  • The theme of Mission LiFE, ‘Say No to Single Use Plastic’, complements and strengthens the core message of World Environment Day 2025.
  • The campaign underlines India’s strong commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
  • The campaign focuses on raising awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution and aims to encourage the use of environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic.
  • A wide range of stakeholders including Central Ministries, State and UT Governments, local bodies, educational institutions, industries, civil society, and community groups will participate in the campaign. 
  • Stakeholders are encouraged to align their activities with the campaign’s objectives and report their contributions via the government’s ‘Meri LiFE’ portal.

The Key thrust areas of the Campaign:

  • Awareness and Advocacy regarding Plastic pollution
  • Reduced Use and Generation of Plastic waste including Single Use Plastic
  • Manage Plastic Waste including Single Use Plastic through Segregation, Collection, Disposal and Recycling of Plastic waste.
  • Promoting development of sustainable alternatives to single use plastic.

World Environment Day 2025

• World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5th June, serves as the principal platform of the United Nations for encouraging global awareness and action for environmental protection.

• The UN Environment Programme will host World Environment Day 2025 in the Republic of Korea. 

  • This is the Republic of Korea's second time to host global observations for World Environment Day. It first hosted the Day in 1997.

• The theme for World Environment Day 2025 is "Ending Global Plastic Pollution" and aligns with UNEP's #BeatPlasticPollution campaign to:

  • Mobilise global communities
  • Advocate practical solutions
  • Spotlight scientific research on plastic impacts
  • Drive actions to Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink plastic usage
